If you have a constant ringing in your ears, you may have a hearing disorder known as tinnitus. Tinnitus is an abnormal perception of a sound which is reported by patients that is unrelated to an external source of stimulation.  At North County Audiology, our audiologist can diagnose and treat your tinnitus symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no “cure” for tinnitus, but there are some things that can be done to help. Our qualified audiologist can evaluate and treat the symptoms with hearing aids for tinnitus and/or tinnitus maskers.

After our audiologist performs a tinnitus assessment which is a special group of hearing tests for tinnitus, our audiologist will discuss and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. The tinnitus assessment includes a diagnostic hearing test, ultra high frequency testing, pitch and loudness matching, and loudness discomfort levels.

Tinnitus Masking

Although the masking of tinnitus is not a true masking, but rather a suppression of the tinnitus, it has proven beneficial for a lot of patients. Tinnitus maskers are used in an attempt to cover up the patient’s perception of the tinnitus with an external sound that competes with the tinnitus. Tinnitus masking can be attempted through the use of noise generators or commercial recordings of various sounds, usually using environmental sounds such as ocean waves, light rainfall, or waterfalls. The idea behind this particular tinnitus treatment is to suppress the “ringing in the ears” and create the feeling of relaxation for the patient. This generally is very beneficial especially for tinnitus sufferers who have trouble sleeping.

Hearing Aids for Tinnitus

Many people who suffer from tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss. Sometimes the loss of hearing is not sufficient to create problems with communication but is sufficient in degree to reduce the natural effects of environmental sounds on the reduction of tinnitus perception. The use of hearing aids and tinnitus maskers are effective ways to minimize and relieve tinnitus. Hearing aids are one of the most common treatment methods for tinnitus relief. At North County Audiology, we offer a variety of hearing aids.

Suffering from ringing in the ears a.k.a. tinnitus may not seem like a major medical problem, but tinnitus and other related hearing disorders which affect millions of Americans can become so severe that it can lead to anxiety, panic, depression, and social isolation which all add up to decreased quality of life.
